Helping you avoid spine surgery

Our primary goal of treatment is to get you back to your everyday activities as quickly and safely as possible. During your initial visit, Dr. Ozanne will assess your medical history and collect more specific information. He may gently move your joints and limbs to better understand your back or neck problem. He may also use X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, pain-relieving epidural injections or myelograms for diagnosis.

Years ago, doctors treated back pain with bed rest and heavy drugs. Patients became sedentary and increasingly dependent on drugs. It has since been discovered that this treatment was actually damaging the back because it weakened muscles and caused more severe back pain, making recovery more difficult.

Nonsurgical treatment options

Time heals – Some back pain will resolve itself in a week or two.

Exercise – Only exercise can strengthen the back muscles and make them more flexible and resistant to future injury. Activity lubricates the back, and it’s as necessary to recovery as oil is to the hinge on a squeaky door.

Physical therapy – Physical therapy increases flexibility and strengthens muscles that support the spine. A therapist may use ultrasound, electrical stimulation, heat or ice, mobilization and exercise to reduce pain and return you to activity.

Medication – Can reduce swelling and pain. The type of medication your physician recommends depends on your symptoms and your level of pain.

Massage – Releases toxins in muscles, increases circulation, releases endorphins, reduces inflammation, alleviates muscle cramps and back muscle spasms, breaks down scar tissue and calms the nervous system.

Chiropractic – The holistic approach of chiropractic care offers viable options for back pain relief and improving spine health. Manipulation and decompression can be beneficial.

Spiritual – Prayer and counseling to help address the secondary effects of pain with each patient.
